A Reading Specialist provides a complete, individualized diagnostic assessment, and all subsequent instruction. Once assessed, K-12 students receive one-to-one or small group instruction, based on their needs. Individualized instruction using research-based methods and progress monitoring will ensure the specialist is able to pinpoint areas of growth and challenge.
At Words, we believe in collective responsiblity for learning. Parents, teachers, the reading specialist, and the students themselves play an active role in achieving success.
When a family arrives at Words Reading Lab, the reading specialist conducts an informal initial interview, to put the child and the parent at ease. Next, Words will conduct a phone interview with the student's classroom teacher, with parent consent.
Based on information gathered in the initial interview process, diagnostic tests are selected to determine how to best identify the needs of the student.
A full report is generated including areas of strength and need. Next, the type of intervention, including instructional methods and materials that will most benefit the student will be discussed. Finally, an in-person meeting with the student's classroom teacher will be scheduled to discuss the student's program and goals.
Instruction is specific, explicit, and purposeful. Students will participate in their own progress monitoring and goal setting throughout the program. This is practiced to motivate them, and to teach them to take responsibility for, and pride in, their own learning.
As the student progresses through the program, we will conduct student led conferences with the parent to discuss progress toward goals.
Together, we can make a difference. The research is clear. Now, Words puts the best of reading research into practice, to benefit your child.
Once a student is thouroughly assessed, a balanced instructional program is planned and implemented. Each student will receive individualized instruction in one or more of the following areas.
Comprehension: Reading comprehension is the ability to understand, interpret, and make judgements about what is read. Fluency, decoding, and vocabulary are all critical components that directly influence a student's ability to comprehend what they read in a variety of texts. However, a student may have a comprehension weakness, without weakness in other areas.
Phonics: Essentially, phonics is the relationship between the letters, (or combination of letters) and their corresponding sounds. Decoding refers to the process of "figuring out" a word, using the 'code' of phonics, and other strategies.
Fluency: Fluency is the ability to read at an appropriate rate, using expression and smoothness. A student who reads slowly, lacks expression, makes frequent errors, or sounds "choppy" may need fluency support. A newscaster provides a good example of a fluent reader. However, because a student reads fluently, does not mean they are comprehending.
Word Analysis: Words uses the term word analysis to include advanced phonics, vocabulary development, context, and multisyllabic word decoding. We teach students several strategies to "decode" and understand word parts, meanings, and structures.
Content Area Literacy: Typically, the focus is on "learning to read" in grades K-3. In grade 4 and beyond, the focus can move to "reading to learn." Because of this shift, many older students benefit from support and instruction in the specific skills and strategies that apply to expository (informational) text. Most reading we do as adults, is in informational text. It is not uncommon for a student who has been successful in lower grades to suddenly struggle in school due to the informational text they encounter in science, social studies, and math classes.
